Social Good During Social Distancing

We are in uncharted territory, but some brands (for-profit and non-profit) have become beacons of light to help us navigate this challenging time. Below are some inspiring brands that are working hard to help those in need during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Allbirds

The Allbirds team has already donated $500,000 worth of shoes to healthcare communities in need. Starting March 24th and running while supplies last, you can bundle any shoe purchase with a donation to immediately supply a pair of Wool Runners to a healthcare professional who's already reached out to their team.

If you don't need a new pair yourself, but still want to help, you can also donate a specially priced pair to a healthcare professional.

Donorchoose.org

The Coronavirus outbreak has closed thousands of schools across the country, leaving countless students without the proper guidance and resources to finish the school year. The Donorschoose.org team wants teachers to reach students who have been isolated by this outbreak and help them better thrive at home.

The Donorschoose.org team asked teachers what they thought about this idea, and thousands positively responded within hours. The Keep Kids Learning fund has since been created, and now teachers are armed with the resources to better reach their students.

"The idea of sending them reading materials that are on their level and aligned to their interests, high-quality art supplies, and engaging games, and something to fill their bellies while they navigate this difficult time without school makes me very emotional. My families are as hard-working as my students, and having the power to support them when I can't see them every day would mean everything to me." -Marie, 1st Grade Teacher

Fanatics and MLB

Major League Baseball jerseys are being turned into desperately needed hospital masks and gowns to help health care workers combat the pandemic.

The MLB and official apparel maker Fanatics are converting machinery from uniform manufacturing to production of up to one million masks and gowns. The first fabrics used were New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies uniforms, which come complete with then pinstripes typically worn by players.

World Central Kitchen

The World Central Kitchen team can be seen at the front lines of our battle to defeat this pandemic. Their team is working across the country to safely distribute individually packaged fresh meals in communities that need support and feeding healthcare workers on the frontlines. They are now serving thousands of meals daily in New York City, Washington DC, Little Rock, Los Angeles, Newark, Oakland, San Francisco, New Orleans, Miami, Puerto Rico, and more.

Their efforts to help are also evolving into a coalition of restaurants. This pandemic has forced thousands of restaurants to close and lay off workers. Still, there is a massive demand to feed children, seniors, and at-risk populations. They have set a goal to put restaurants back to work in service of our country and guarantee a reliable stream of revenue.

FarmLink

When college campuses closed in March 2020, a select group of students felt compelled to make a positive impact amid the global pandemic. The students created FarmLink, a grassroots movement that strives to prevent food waste and alleviate food insecurity.

While farms are experiencing extreme surplus due to reduced commercial orders, food banks are facing soaring demand and shortages of donated food. FarmLink is innovating a new supply chain to transport surplus produce from farms to food banks in need.
