As the Houston SPCA approached its 100th anniversary, the organization sought to honor its remarkable legacy while inspiring the next generation of animal advocates. With support from the J.W. Couch Foundation, a series of powerful marketing videos was produced to bring their century of compassion to life and propel their mission into the future.
In a quiet corner of Houston, a frightened puppy is gently lifted from a transport crate, wrapped in a warm blanket, and carried into a place of safety. It's a scene that has played out in countless variations for one hundred years — each rescue a small but powerful echo of a promise made by community leaders back in 1924. That promise? To put the care and well-being of animals first, always.
The Houston SPCA has spent a century keeping that promise. From its founding by a group of compassionate Houstonians determined to protect the city's most vulnerable creatures, the organization has grown alongside the city it serves — saving and providing services for millions of animals across generations. Today, it stands as one of Houston's most iconic nonprofits, an institution whose work touches not only domestic pets but also wildlife, livestock, and the countless humans whose lives are made brighter by the animals they love.
A Milestone Worth Sharing
As the Houston SPCA approached its 100-year anniversary in 2023, leadership recognized a rare and meaningful opportunity. A century of life-saving work deserved to be celebrated — but more than that, it deserved to be shared. In an age where digital storytelling shapes how communities connect, give, and rally around causes, the organization needed a way to bring its story to life for a new generation of supporters.
That's where the Celebrating 100 Years Marketing Videos project was born. The goal: to honor the past, illuminate the present, and cast a bold vision for the future of animal welfare in Houston — all through the universal language of film.
Bringing the Story to Life
To create video content worthy of the milestone, the J.W. Couch Foundation partnered the Houston SPCA with Tectonic Video, a team trusted by some of the most respected nonprofits in the country. Guided by their proprietary Nonprofit Video Index™ research, Tectonic's award-winning filmmakers immersed themselves in the Houston SPCA's world — listening, observing, and capturing the heart of the organization's mission.
The result was a suite of videos that don't just tell a story. They invite viewers into one — a story of rescue, resilience, and unwavering commitment to creatures who cannot speak for themselves.
The Houston SPCA wishes to express our immense gratitude to the J.W. Couch Foundation Trustees for the wonderful storytelling tool you have given us. Nonprofits rarely have funds to use for such remarkable visual tools. We are so grateful to the Foundation for recognizing how important and impactful something like this can be."Patricia E. Impact That Reaches Beyond the Screen
Today, the Houston SPCA is putting these videos to work across every marketing channel — from social media to donor presentations to community outreach. They are helping recruit volunteers, inspire donors, and educate the public about the organization's expansive work in both domestic and wildlife animal care. More importantly, they are equipping a new generation of advocates with the inspiration and clarity they need to carry the mission forward.
Looking Toward the Next 100 Years
One hundred years ago, a group of Houstonians decided that no animal in their city should suffer alone. That decision has saved millions of lives. Now, with a refreshed story to tell and powerful new tools to tell it with, the Houston SPCA is ready to write the next chapter — one in which compassion isn't just preserved, but amplified, shared, and multiplied across an ever-growing community of advocates. The next century of care has begun, and its story is just getting started.
