Walton County, Florida, is a place of rare and breathtaking beauty. Sugar-white beaches, rare coastal dune lakes, and ancient pine forests draw millions of visitors each year. But that very allure has made Walton one of the fastest-growing counties in the country, putting unprecedented pressure on the landscapes that define it.
Scenic Walton, a local chapter of Scenic America, stands at the intersection of growth and preservation. Their mission is rooted in a powerful belief: that progress and natural beauty are not opposing forces, but partners. To protect what makes Walton County extraordinary, they needed more than passion and policy expertise — they needed a way to make people feel what is at stake.
The Power of Telling a Beautiful Story
For years, Scenic Walton and its national parent organization had compelling work to share but few high-value communication assets to share it with. Reaching policymakers, community members, and supporters across the country required imagery and storytelling that matched the majesty of the places they were fighting to preserve.
That's where the J.W. Couch Foundation's marketing and communications grant came in. By investing in professional-grade storytelling, the Foundation helped Scenic Walton transform its message into something unforgettable — a poetic, cinematic portrait of a place worth protecting and a model for how communities everywhere can grow the right way.
Before this grant, we had very few high-value communication assets. The JWC Foundation helped us tell a beautiful local story and create stunning on-brand digital assets that we can use for various marketing campaigns.Mark Falzone, President of Scenic America
From Local Story to National Movement
The finished work became more than a single video. Scenic Walton and Scenic America gained a full arsenal of still images, short clips, and marketing-ready content to fuel campaigns for years to come. The quality of the storytelling also caught the attention of strategic partners — including the nationally recognized beach lifestyle brand 30A, which offered to share the video with its audience of more than one million followers.
Suddenly, a small but mighty nonprofit in a single Florida county had a platform that reached far beyond its borders, inspiring other communities and policymakers to imagine what thoughtful, beauty-forward growth could look like.
Preservation, Amplified
At the J.W. Couch Foundation, we believe preservation begins with a story well told. When a community can see its own beauty reflected back through powerful imagery and language, it becomes a community willing to fight for it.
Scenic Walton is showing the country what's possible when growth is guided by intention and grounded in love of place. With sharper tools and a clearer voice, they are doing more than protecting a corner of Florida — they are setting the standard for what preservation can look like everywhere.
