Flowing Forward: Clean Water Transforms a Rwandan Community

In partnership with charity: water, the J.W. Couch Foundation helped fund a piped water system serving nearly 400 people in Rwanda. The project delivers clean, safe drinking water to a community still rebuilding from tragedy, unlocking better health and new economic possibilities.

In the United States, clean water flows from every tap. We drink it, cook with it, and wash with it without a second thought. But for millions of people around the world, access to safe water is a daily struggle — one that shapes everything from health and education to economic opportunity.

That truth came into sharp focus when we partnered with charity: water, a nonprofit on a mission to end the global water crisis. Through their work, we learned the story of a community in Rwanda still healing from one of the darkest chapters in modern history.

A Country Rebuilding, One Resource at a Time

More than two decades after a genocide claimed over 800,000 lives and displaced countless more, Rwanda continues its remarkable journey of recovery. The government has made extraordinary strides toward a more hopeful future, yet one quiet, persistent threat remains: waterborne disease, still among the leading causes of death across the country.

Every day, families spend hours climbing steep, narrow mountain paths to collect water from distant rivers and streams. They carry it home knowing full well that the very water meant to sustain them may also make them sick. It is a heartbreaking cycle — and one that clean water infrastructure can break.

A Local Partnership With Lasting Impact

To address the challenge at its root, charity: water teamed up with Water for People, an organization that designs clean water systems managed and maintained by local communities. This approach ensures that long after outside teams have moved on, the systems continue to serve the people who depend on them.

Together, we helped fund a piped water system serving nearly 400 people in a single Rwandan community. The system collects stream and spring water through a dam, intake, and catchment structure, then channels safe, drinkable water directly to those who need it most — no more dangerous treks, no more contaminated sources.

Why This Work Matters

When children no longer fall ill from the water they drink, they can stay in school. When mothers no longer spend their days hauling jugs up mountainsides, they can invest in their families and livelihoods. When communities can trust their water, they can build futures.

This project is one example of what becomes possible when generous partners, innovative nonprofits, and local leaders work in concert. It is also an invitation — to imagine a world where every person, in every country, has access to life's most basic need.

We are proud to stand alongside charity: water in that mission, and grateful for the chance to help one community in Rwanda take a powerful step toward a healthier, more hopeful tomorrow.
