Opening Doors to College for Every KIPPster

In 2018, the J.W. Couch Foundation awarded a grant to KIPP Texas to power its KIPP Through College Program in Houston. The investment helped deliver personalized college counseling, ACT preparation, and life-changing campus visits to thousands of students from educationally underserved communities.

Every child deserves an exemplary education. It's a belief that drives the J.W. Couch Foundation, and it's the same conviction that has fueled KIPP Texas Public Schools for nearly three decades. When our paths crossed in 2018, we knew we had found a partner with the vision, the track record, and the heart to truly transform lives.

That year, the Foundation proudly invested in KIPP Texas's KIPP Through College Program — a commitment to ensuring that students from every background have the support they need not only to reach college, but to thrive once they get there.

A Statewide Movement, A Local Mission

2018 marked a pivotal moment for KIPP in Texas. Four regional networks united to form a single statewide nonprofit — KIPP Texas Public Schools — leading 52 public charter schools serving more than 27,000 PreK–12 students across Austin, Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio. The unification allowed each region to tailor curriculum to local students and families while drawing on shared talent, resources, and instructional expertise.

Nowhere was the need more urgent than in Houston, where nearly 90% of KIPP students are economically disadvantaged and 98% identify as ethnic minorities. The statistics tell a hard truth: only 10% of low-income students in Harris County complete college, compared to 82% of their higher-income peers. Without intervention, that gap perpetuates cycles of poverty and limited opportunity for generations.

Changing the Narrative

KIPP refuses to accept those odds — and neither did we. With our support, the KIPP Through College Program reached at least 15,000 students across 29 Houston schools, providing exactly the kind of guidance that changes trajectories:

One-on-one personalized college counseling. ACT preparation. College visits across the country that turn abstract dreams into tangible goals.

For a student who has never set foot on a university campus, walking across a quad for the first time isn't just a field trip — it's the moment a future becomes real.

Results Worth Celebrating

The KIPP Texas–Houston Class of 2018 told the story better than any report could:

Over 500 students earned more than 3,000 college acceptances to 81 unique colleges. 98% of the Class of 2018 enrolled in college that fall, earning more than $21 million in grants and scholarships.KIPP Texas Team

Behind every one of those acceptance letters is a young person who was told — and now believes — that they belong in any classroom, on any campus, in any career they choose.

Why It Matters

As a tuition-free, nonprofit public charter network, KIPP schools receive less public funding than traditional districts, making private philanthropy essential to programs like KIPP Through College. KIPP's philosophy is simple and powerful: every child, regardless of economic background, has the right to an exemplary education, and all children will learn and achieve at high levels when given the opportunity.

The J.W. Couch Foundation is honored to stand alongside KIPP Texas as they prove that promise true — one student, one acceptance letter, one transformed future at a time.
